I racked my brain on what to do for Mike for his birthday. He really made mine special and I wanted to do the same for him. Cash is tight right now and nothing good was coming to mind. And then Mom called. She too had been trying to come up with something for him. She is brilliant! She called on Tuesday and said, "I know what I am going to do for Mike for his birthday! I will be there Friday and I want to keep Sullivan while you and Mike go out for the night. Go somewhere, get away for a night or 2!" I was so excited! I looked into so much to do and just couldn't come up with the most fabulous idea. The weather was supposed to be nasty and I just did not want to go too far away. A girlfriend recommended to go stay at the Town Center here in Virginia Beach at the Hilton Garden Inn.
After some research , that is what I decided we would do. So I booked the room.
My plan was this: I was going to bake him this fabulous cake I saw on Bakerella's blog and have our bags packed before her got home from work. Then he would get home and a little after he got here, mom would show up! Surprise! We were going to get dressed to go to dinner. I was not going to tell him where we were going but was going to show up at PF Changs. He loves Chinese food and we have heard good stuff about it! Then after good eats and good drinks we would see a movie and then head to our room. Next day, relax and do whatever....

What really happened: Mike showed up 2 hours early from work and I was just sifting the 4.5 cups of flour for this massive cake I was going to attempt to make him. He walked in, laughed at me and said to please not bake that cake. He even called me Betty Crocker. So, I quit. I do not think I had a mixing bowl big enough anyway. I had already tried to stall him some, so mom could get here but it didn't work. He didn't want hot dogs so instead of stopping and getting them he came home and was going back out for Chicken. So, I told him he has to disappear for a bit. He thought I had to wrap presents etc... Well I did but I also had to finish packing and I called Mom to see where she was. She was close... She stopped and picked up a cake from the grocery store and about 5:30 when Mike was thinking I better go get chicken, she walked through the door and into our backyard where Mike and Sully were playing, singing Happy Birthday with a cake and Balloons! It was great!!!
The shock on his face was priceless! He looked at her and said, "What? What are you doing here?" Of course followed by a hug! We sang happy Birthday, blew out candles and then opened presents.
Mom send a package to throw him off and I had him some of his favorite things. Golf balls and i-Tunes gift certificate! It was a fun little party. I told him we were going out to dinner and we had to get ready. So we got out of the house about 7pm and headed to PF Changs. He was excited! He said this was the best birthday gift ever. As we were circling to find a parking spot, I told him to pull in a parking lot. He said, "Allison, we cant park there that is the hotel." I said, "Just pull in." He was a little frustrated but pulled in. Again tell him me that this was a hotel. I told him to make a loop then. He did and ended up at the front door, now even more frustrated! I was loving it. He was clueless. He stopped and looked at me and said, "Now we have to wait for all these cars." I said, "Go check in, reservations are under my name!" You should have seen his face! He was so so surprised! It was perfect! He even said, "What about clothes?" "They are in the back honey." He could not believe it. We got checked in and headed to PF Changes. Two hours wait. NO way! So we headed to Cheesecake factory.
Had a nice dinner and drinks and we were so tired we headed to our room and we were both asleep with in 30 minutes. The next day we lounged around as long as possible and then drove around in the cold rain trying to find something to do. We ate lunch and headed home. We had such a good time and Mike said that having that time together - a real date - was better than any gift. And he is right. Thanks Mom and Dad - thanks for everything, especially for the love you have for me and my little family! It was wonderful and so thoughtful. Ya'll are the best!
