when it is a kidney stone.
So, Mike woke me up at around 5something Saturday a.m. and said, "Hey baby, I need you to get up, I do not feel so well." My feet hit the floor so fast. He was in severe lower back pain and nauseated. So after quizzing him on symptoms I decided to try google. Nothing. Yep, google had absolutely nothing that came up with those symptoms. I asked him if we needed to go to the Emergency Room and he said he didn't know. Then about 5 minutes later he said that he didn't want to but he thinks we need to. So...scared to death, I darted upstairs, threw on clothes, brushed my teeth, grabbed Sully out of the bed and flew back down. It took me maybe 3 minutes. We jumped in the car and raced to the ER. Mike was in so much pain and I was terrified. All I could think about was his dad and I couldn't for the life of me remember where his dads cancer was. Mike's Dad passed away when Mike was 21 and Mike's mom when Mike was a child, I think 9. So, my brain was in full panic. I did not think he was dying but I was terrified about what could cause this much pain and I kept hoping it was a pulled muscle. I mean after all he had played golf, mowed the yard, weed eated and planted a tree that day. Maybe...just maybe it could be that simple.
About half way to the hospital he said, "I think we should have called an ambulance." I said, "I'm going to cry." And he said, "You can't, you have to be strong for Sullivan." He was close to tears. I knew it was not just a pulled muscle. I sped up trying to decide whether or not to stop and call the ambulance. We finally got there and Mike took off inside. By the time I got Sullivan out of the car and walked in they had just taken him back. The receptionist/corpman said, "You don't look good." Mike told her what was wrong and she said, "Sounds like kidney stone!" Wow, that easy.
Anyway, to make a long story short they took him back, hooked him to IV fluids, narcotics and toradol and started running tests. Sure enough 2 kidney stone each 2mm in size. He loved the narcotics and by the time we left there he felt great! We went to pharmacy to get his bag of goodies and while he was there he has to tinkle. So...off he went with strainer in hand. And back he comes with his strainer wrapped in paper! He has passed his first stone. :) He was so happy because that part didn't hurt, granted he was still on pain meds. We got his bag of goodies and left and he has been perfectly fine ever since. He has not passed the 2nd stone that we know of but he is pain free and never even took a percacet! He had wonderful care at Portsmouth Naval and I can not tell you the relief we both felt. He was fine. It was painful, the worst pain he had EVER experienced but, he was OK and that was what mattered in the long run. Thank God for little blessings because those stones were actually a blessing that day!
