Our little Monkey has surgery...
On Sept 9, 2011 Mason had a hydrocelectomy.
What is that? Is is to repair a hydrocele.
What is that? A hydrocele is a fluid-filled sac surrounding a testicle that results in swelling of the scrotum, the loose bag of skin underneath the penis. Up to 10 percent of male infants have a hydrocele at birth, but most hydroceles disappear without treatment within the first year of life. Thank you MayoClinic for this definition. If they do not disappear then they must go in and close off the hole that is allowing the fluid into the scrotum to prevent a hernia or painful swelling later in life.
We noticed Mason's right "boy" to be swollen and took him to the doctor. After lots of lights shining through his "boys" and ultrasounds they sent us to a urologist. He scheduled surgery.
I was all geared up, not freaking at all about the surgery. Ready to quit worrying that he may get a hernia. Had it in my mind it was a 30 minute surgery with no IV only under gas. Not sure why.
Had to be at hospital at 5:45 on Friday morning. Before we went in that morning we had to give him a bath and scrub him down with antibacterial brush. Got there a little early. Got him signed in, checked in and went to waiting area. Met resident, anesthesiologist, nurses and doctor. Had to wait until 7:30 before we handed him over. He was in Mike's arms sound asleep. So sweet. Mike handed him over to the nurses and the male nurse looked at me, (guess it obvious I was about to lose it) and said, "Don't worry, we will take good care of him and he will be just fine." Yep, I lost it. Stood in the vending machine room and cried my eyes out. You would have thought he was having a major surgery.
They gave him orange flavored gas and once he was out they gave him other stuff including a caudal block. A caudal block is like an epidural except it is in the caudal space. It is not near spinal fluid or spinal cord so it is safer. Made him numb from the waste down. Surgery took a little over an hour. We went and got breakfast in cafeteria and sat in waiting room watching the screen. He was assigned a number and we could watch his number on the screen to know when we went into surgery and when he was in recovery. When surgery was over the doctor came to find us to tell us all went well! He said the hole was very small. Had a little bit of intestines poking through but the hole was too small to have had a hernia. Relief washed over us. We knew he would be OK but...when it is your baby there is always that feeling of relief when it is all over and all is OK. We waited until they called us and we were able to go back to the recovery room. He was pitiful. The anesthesia really made him feel bad. But we loved on him and he did very well. We were home by 10 am. He has a little over a 1 inch incision on his right lower belly but has healed very well. His swelling is all gone and some how as he has healed he has also started sleeping through the night. Wondering if the 2 may have been related. Things that make you go hummm....
We are just so thankful to our doctors, to CHKD and to the Lord for taking good care of our baby. It was a minor surgery but, cutting on MY babies is a HUGE deal to me. We are blessed beyond belief.
